From this week's e-Smoke Signals:

We are excited to report that the Mascot Search received 524 nominations for the new mascot! 169 of these were write-ins and 355 were online submissions. 61.6% of nominations came from alumni, 21.8% came from current students, 6.8% were from friends of the university, 5.8% were from staff and 4% were from faculty. Of the 524 submissions, 144 different names were suggested.
Through a series of focus groups, Mascot Selection Committee discussions and a voting process, these submissions will be whittled to 10-15 names and finally to the top three selections by January 2011.
A final round of voting will begin in February and a recommendation based on that vote will be presented to the Board at its March 2011 meeting.

The number of unique nominations was later updated to 146.
Contact me if you have anything to say about the mascot selection process or about your thoughts on what the new mascot should be.
