McMurry University Board of Trustees Approve Mascot Search at October Meeting

From the University's Press Release on the issue:

OCTOBER 21, 2010 - ABILENE, TX

The McMurry University Board of Trustees approved a process for the selection of a new mascot for the University during their fall meeting on Oct. 15.

A committee consisting of McMurry alumni, faculty, athletic staff, administration and students was formed this summer and charged with setting up a mascot search process. The committee researched processes implemented by other universities that had been involved, or currently were involved, in a mascot search, and they prepared a recommendation which the board accepted at its Friday meeting.

The board action will create a Mascot Selection Committee, made up of faculty, students and alumni. The committee will solicit possible mascot names for consideration, which will be compiled and reviewed. The committee will narrow the list to 20-25 names by Thanksgiving and through a series of focus groups, committee discussions and a voting process, the field will be whittled to 10-15 names and finally to the top three selections by January 2011. A final round of voting will begin in February and a recommendation based on that vote will be presented to the Board at its March 2011 meeting.

McMurry University is committed to providing opportunities and experiences to insure that every McMurry student achieves their maximum potential—in their careers, their personal relationships, and in their roles as moral citizens and contributing members of society.
